The Seminar Leaders Mentorship Program (SLmp) is a professional development program that seeks to empower college students to own their success by promoting career readiness.  The SLMP started out by gaining the support of fellow Howard alumni for the monthly HU "R U Ready" Seminar.  The program is offered during the academic year.

 

Our mission is to adequately prepare college students for the professional world by hosting monthly seminars that introduce them to strategies ("the soft skills") to successfully navigate the workplace upon graduation. While college prepares students with the technical skills required to be successful during their careers, the program's focus is on preparing them with the necessary skills to understand and navigate the Corporate Culture.Once students master textbook training and succeed in obtaining a degree in their specialty, they believe they are well equipped to start their careers. That is true; however there are additional behaviors and skills that are required to be successful which aren't taught in school. The Seminar Group introduces proper protocol regarding appropriate behavior, use of social media, effective networking, manager/employee relationships, and dress for success, just to name a few. While these skills appear to be second nature to working professionals, graduates are moving from students to professionals. The training is normally "on the job".

 

This organization’s foundation is based on the belief that the earlier a person is equipped with the tools for success in real life situations, the more prepared they will be at successfully navigating and succeeding in attaining their future career endeavors. Monthly seminars include a discussion including an interactive activity and professional presentation that focuses on some of the experiences young people encounter at beginning of their career. The seminars are conducted on Howard University’s campus. HUSLMP believes that there is no greater reward than positively impacting the lives of young people that will come after us. Our motto is to” build as you gain success.” We believe one of the best ways to give back to our community, is to lift up others as we climb our ladders to success.
